Introduction

In October 1953 Sir John Gielgud, then at the zenith of his fame as one of the great twentieth-century actors, was arrested in a Chelsea public lavatory. Plague over England explores the resulting scandal and its impact on the establishment and the ordinary gay men inhabiting the then twilight world of gay society. This play is a witty, caustic and painfully poignant exploration of a period not so long ago when homosexuality was likened to cancer or drug addiction.
