Introduction

Garry Essendine, a rather attractive yet self-absorbed actor, is about to embark on a tour of Africa, perhaps to stave off a mid-life crisis. As he tries to tidy up his affairs in preparation for the trip, he has to throw out a wide-eyed fan, deal with his long suffering secretary, placate his ex-wife and escape the attentions of an aspiring playwright. A fast-paced whirl of intrigue, love affairs and thwarted ambition, Present Laughter is Coward at his most autobiographical — and irrepressibly funny.
