Introduction
Rome, a democracy, has a leader who wishes to be a dictator, a king. Is this death for democracy? Will Romans no longer be free men? What is to be done about Julius Caesar?

Julius Caesar is Shakespeare’s first great tragedy. It tells the story of the conspiracy to kill Caesar, his assassination, and the civil war that followed, as Caesar’s ghost bloodily pursued the chief murderers across the Roman world.

Ambition, idealism, conspiracy, murder, civil chaos and war propel this play forward at a furious speed. It is words and spin that prove the most dangerous weapons in the battle to win the hearts and minds of the people.
Directed by Emma Hillman

Performances: 1st – 5th November 2005, Bell Theatre.

Introduction
Road by Jim Cartwright has been compared to Under Milk Wood and this is a good model for the structure of the piece: like the narrator in Thomas’ play for voices, Scullery our drunken guide meanders aimlessly up and down his road pointing out the features of the grim Lancashire landscape and setting the scenes for the glimpses we see of the inhabitants’ lives.

Brenda wants a pound on one, Prof’s after a recollection, Carol and Louise are looking for summat different, Barry and Marion are out to kill each other, Dor and Lane keep on snogging through. Eddie thinks he’s a cowboy, DJ Bisto invites you to his Beatoven disco and Joey’s just had enough. All human life is here. It’s a poetic depiction of the desolation wrought on the industrial North during the government of Our Lady Thatcher. Despite this, the characters are juicy with vitality expressing themselves in great verbal arias. Shagging, smoking, fighting, drinking, disco, fish and chips, seduction, thievery, stolen dreams, lost ideals, soldiers, tarts, housewives, moochers, drunks, academics, Buddhists and skinheads. Community. Brink, Carol, Eddie and Louise finish the night off for us conveying their greatest fears and dreams, the hopelessness of their hope and the thought that somehow they might escape.

“Hold tight! Here we go! Come on! Watch the kerb missus! Road’s coming round!”

There will be some entertainment in the bar before the show and at the interval provided by some of the inhabitants of Road.

“A surreal vision of the contemporary urban landscape…..uncomfortable and magical, funny and bitter. It is a Northern Under Milk Wood, high on pills and booze” Sunday Times.

“I promise you something different. Let’s see how much difference you can take” Brink, Road.

Directed by Mark Bullock

Performances: Wed 21st to Sat 24th September 2005, Prompt Corner

Introduction
Between Worlds: "How on earth did I get here? When will I be able to leave? Where will I go?"

Every guest who gets to the Two Worlds Hotel asks the same questions. But nobody knows the answers. In this strange place, anything is possible, even miracles - the lame walk again and liars tell the truth. The enigmatic Doctor S. looks after the guests during their stay, but his silence only increases their fears. Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt's new play is a metaphysical suspense drama between dream and reality, life and death, comedy and tragedy. Schmitt's play is another desperate quest as well as a variation on the notion of Meaning. In the end, Mystery remains the sole reason for hope.

The guests are Colin, a man who has been drinking too much and has crashed his car into a tree. The Chairman who is a self-important businessman perpetually preoccupied with the belief that the only way he'll be able to leave is to organise a meeting with the doctor and to explain how well connected he is. The Magus, a fortune teller who has a detached, sardonic view of the others but with an underlying warmth and affection. Jessie a cleaning lady whose life on earth has never been comfortable, and who is amazed to find herself so well cared for. Laura, a paraplegic girl who in the real world is confined to a bed or a wheelchair and unable to do anything for herself but in the hotel has a normal healthy body.
