Please Sir Can I Have Some More?

The idea of staging a full-length musical the the South London Theatre provokes the same sort of astonishment as Dr Johnson on hearing a woman preach. "it is not done well," remarked the great man, "but you are surprised to find it done at all.

Such stricture have to be modified in the light of what producer Ann Mattey and her team have actually tried to achieve, which is to present a kind of chamber version of Lionel Bart's "Oliver!" rather than the real thing.

On that basis it works surprisingly well in parts and quite brilliantly in the case of Ann Mattey herself, whose force of personality and power of projection combine to crate a vividly sensual Nancy. Her son, David, a sweet-natured Oliver Twist whose voice has just broken, is happy enough to leave her the chores of singing "Where is Love?", which she does in a manner to suggest it might have been written for Nancy instead of Oliver himself........
