by Jonathan Harvey

Directed by Elaine Heath

Performances: Tue 4th – Sat 8th September 2007, Bell Theatre

Summer, 1984. It's hot - and it's about to get a whole lot hotter!

Jonathan Harvey's critically acclaimed play, Beautiful Thing, comes to the SLT stage, in a lavish production to mark the theatre's 40th birthday celebrations.

With the Bell Stage transformed into a Thamesmead housing estate (complete with a bedroom that miraculously appears as if by magic) get ready for the feelgood, make you wanna clap your hands and dance up and down phenomenen that is Beautiful Thing - An Urban Fairytale.

Jonathan Harvey's best-known play was first staged at the fringe Bush Theatre in 1993, then went on to become a big West End hit and was filmed in 1996.

The title refers not to gay love as such, but to the first love experienced by two 16-year-olds, Jamie (David Clements) and Ste (Tom Bucher), one summer on a council estate in south-east London. Jamie bunks off from sport at school, while Ste is renowned for his all-round sporting prowess, but when Ste stays over one night after a violent argument with his father and brother, their mutual attraction develops into sexual awakening and romance blossoms.

Jamie's mother, Sandra (SLT newcomer Fiona Cullen), is too preoccupied with her shift work as a barmaid and with her dope-smoking artist boyfriend Tony (Chris Learmonth) to notice what's going on, but the Mama Cass-obsessed girl next door, Leah (Rita Goodhead), soon realises why Ste hasn't responded to her advances.

Much has changed since the play was written - including the repeal of the discriminatory Section 28 of the 1988 Local Government Act forbidding the 'promotion of homosexuality', the lowering of the homosexual age of consent to 16 and, most recently, the introduction of 'civil partnerships' for gay people - but Beautiful Thing has dated well because it is more romantic than polemical. This tender comedy of adolescent love retains its charm.

Jonathan Harvey's tale of love blossoming between two teenage boys in a Thamesmead council block still retains all the humour and emotional clarity that it did when the original opened over a decade ago. Great writing stands the test of time - the voices are still true.

Introduction
A subversive comedy about an army entertainment corps stationed in South East Asia in 1948, Privates on Parade charts the journey of young Steven Flowers, who is thrown into the Song and Dance Unit South East Asia, deep in the Malayan jungle. By evoking the great stars of the time, from Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to Carmen Miranda and Noël Coward, he achieves a spectacular rite of passage with a little help from the outrageous Captain Terri Dennis.

Peter Nichols's 1977 revue-style portrait of Army life, set in 1940s Malaya and documenting the frenetically sexual, mostly gay, often desperate antics of a song-and-dance unit, attached, as one soldier drawls, to 'the Queen's Own Middlesex Regiment'.

The show has eleven musical numbers, most of them pastiches of styles of the day, such as "Could you please inform us how we came to lose the war" a homage to Noël Coward, and "Sunnyside Lane" a Flanagan and Allen number.

The play is largely based on Nicols's own post-wartime experiences as a member of C.S.E or Combined Services Entertainments, where he shared a stage with none other than John Schlesinger, Stanley Baxter and Kenneth Williams. The outfit, under command of "stiff-upper-lip" Major Giles Flack, is a performance unit called SADUESA: Song and Dance Unit, South-East Asia. The company is also under the command of an outlandish theatrical queen, Dennis. Together, the unlikely duo of Flack and Dennis have to prepare the troupe for the tour of the war zone. They are accompanied by a psychotic Sargent-Major, who's involved in selling arms to rebels; and a young officer, recently transfered from the Intelligence Corps.
Introduction
An irreverent, bawdy, hilarious, peek into the boudoir of Elizabeth I, this wonderfully written and heroically translated Fo has been wittily described as "History on drugs". An aging Elizabeth is eagerly awaiting the arrival of her young beau, the Earl of Essex. In order to prepare for this tryst, she has summoned an outrageous beautician, Dame Grosslady, who appears to speak a peculiar language all of her own. Nothing goes to plan, would-be assassins appear out of the woodwork, and something very interesting is found in the queen's bed. If you thought Blackadder's Elizabeth was fun, you haven't seen anything yet...
From the author of "Dead Funny", "Cleo, Camping, Emmanuelle and Dick", "Insignificance" and "Hitchcock Blonde" and set in the Hampstead consulting room of Sigmund Freud during wartime, this fascinating and highly original play takes the actual meeting of Freud, the father of modern psychoanalysis and Salvador Dali, the deeply eccentric surrealist artist as a starting point. Throw in a scantily dressed young woman with a hidden agenda, Freud’s Jewish doctor – a man with a mission, and the unseen presence of Freud’s daughter Anna, and anything can happen...
